Bobbie Joe Patton, affectionately known as "Poppoo", was born on November 5, 1925, in Whitt, Texas. He passed away at home on June 16, 2017, at the age of 91. He was the valedictorian of the Whitt High School class of 1944 and joined the Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he graduated from North Texas State College with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics. Bobbie Joe Patton, affectionately known as "Poppoo", was born on November 5, 1925, in Whitt, Texas. He passed away at home on June 16, 2017, at the age of 91. He was the valedictorian of the Whitt High School class of 1944 and joined the Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he graduated from North Texas State College with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics. While in school, he met the love of his life, Glenda Nell Colbert, who preceded him in death on March 2, 2017. Married 66 years, they both enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, traveling and dancing. They were lifetime members of the Diamond Jubileers Square Dance Club. Bob served as President as one of the many contributions he made to the club. In 1952, Bob joined Mobil Oil. His career focused on Research and Development and resulted in earning 35 patents to his credit. He was considered a pioneer in MWD, directional drilling, lost well relocation, and magnetic technology. The "Room-Size Enclosure for Geomagnetic Shielding" was used to test the effect on instruments in space and hallmark in his career (now at MIT). After 30 years, Bob retired from Mobil, but continued as a private consultant in the business. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Althia and John Elmer Patton; brothers Thomas Orville and Virgil Elmo Patton. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Hugh (H.L.) Colbert, three children, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren with Olivia Bobbie and Isabelle Grace due Sept 2017. His children are Diane Nabholtz (Dallas), Elaine Sveen (Mike/Austin), and John Patton (Jan/Ennis). Grandchildren include Liz Enge (Chris), Rick Moses, Cheryl Cook (Todd), Dave Sveen (Lauren), Elizabeth Allen (Justin), Megan Trimble (Brandon and Baby Beau), and Sara Sveen. Also surviving are Terry Patton (Suesan), Janice, Jana, and Joni Perry. The family wishes to thank his caretakers for their loving commitment to his care. Services will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 10:00 am. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm at Whitt Cemetery in Whitt, Texas, with burial to follow.
